South Metro Showtime – Video competition from a Scout Leader’s perspective.

When I first heard about the video competition I ran the idea past my scouts to see if they were interested, and fortunately they were.  I wasn’t sure at first how it would work out but it turned out to be a fantastic experience for all involved.

From a scout leader’s perspective the process took 3 nights of the term, plus another one to go and enjoy watching the show, and to see if our entry would win.  That’s nearly half a term planned out for you!

Week 1 : Planning.  We had a brainstorm session then voted on the theme we wanted and then started writing it.  For the brainstorm we insisted that no comments were to be made by other scouts, to give all a chance to put forward ideas without feeling worried about how they would be perceived.  We then narrowed down the list to a few choices and had a vote – ending up with the theme/story line the scouts wanted to follow.

With some minimal guidance from the leaders to make sure the
story was appropriate we started writing scenes and dialogue, then built upon this and by the end of the night ended up with a rough script and plan.  There was space to add/delete/modify this the next week when we started rehearsing it.  We allocated roles, such as who was organizing props, music and costumes, who was bringing equipment to film the movie and who was going to do the final editing on the computer.

Week 2 : Rehearsing.  We went through and rehearsed each scene as it had been planned then allowed discussion after each scene as to what worked and what needed changing.  I was surprised and pleased with the depth of the ideas the scouts were able to add and the way they could develop the script into something that was a great story.  After all the modifications had been made and the scouts were happy with the story line we ran through and rehearsed it all one more time.

Week 3 : Filming.  Often a scene took 3-4 takes but that’s the beauty of modern technology as it could just be edited it out at the end! There was a lot of laughter and fun during the filming of each scene and the scouts really enjoyed this process.  It was great to see some of my more quiet scouts really shine when put in front of the camera.   Finally all scenes were filmed and it was time for editing.  Now I have absolutely no idea how to do this so we invited one of the Venturers down who worked with and taught one of the scouts the editing process on an Apple Mac computer program.   They didn’t get this done on the scout night so the two of them made arrangements to complete it on the following weekend, which they did, and the following week at scouts I was presented with the completed movie on a disc, ready for submission to the competition.

From a scout’s perspective they all had a fabulous time, learnt a new skill and were excited about their final product.  Scouts were given the opportunity to be involved in whatever capacity they wished. There was no pressure to be in the film, with some scouts choosing to be doing the filming, or running the music instead.  After the process was completed we were able to sign off scouts on their entertainers, performing arts or technology badge, depending on the role they had taken in completing the movie.

We then encouraged all the scouts and their families to come along to watch South Metro Showtime on the scout night (Thursday night).  Previously we had had only a couple of kids turn up to watch the show each year, but with the chance of seeing their movie on the big screen we had over 20 come along.  And you know what – they really loved the show (even though our entry didn’t win that year!)

We then organized to show the movie at our group’s ARAP (Annual report and Presentation) evening, and this created the best attendance at an ARAP that we had had in years!  An unexpected benefit from the whole process!

This year we asked if the scouts wanted to enter again – thinking that because they didn’t win last year they might not be keen. However they were keen, and probably even more so in order to do ‘better’ this year.  So we again ran through the same process and they had just as much fun and are all attending South Metro Showtime in a couple of weeks to see if they have the winning entry!
